What Does Addition and Subtraction Together Mean?

Addition and subtraction together means solving a math problem that contains both adding and subtracting numbers in the same question. We add some numbers and subtract others to find the final answer.

Note: Students may need to add numbers first and then subtract.

Solved Examples on Mixed Addition and Subtraction Together:

Study the following examples:

1. Simplify: 810 – 217 + 186.

Solution:

   810 – 217 + 186.

= 810 + 186 – 217; [First arrange the numbers to be added and then subtract.]

= 996 – 217

= 779

Therefore, 810 – 217 + 186 = 779.

2. Simplify: 7784 – 3085 + 1596 – 2967.

Solution:

Step I: Add the numbers with ‘+’ sign before them. (7784 and 1596)

            7784 + 1596

Step II: Add the numbers with ‘-‘ sign before them. (-3085 and -2967)

              3085 + 2967

Step III: Subtract second sum from the first sum.

               9380 – 6052

Therefore, 7784 – 3085 + 1596 – 2967 = 3328.

Mixed Addition and Subtraction Word Problems:

Solution:

    850 – 325 + 180
= 525 + 180
= 705

Answer: 705 mangoes

3. A shop had 560 toys. It received 145 new toys and sold 210 toys. How many toys are left?
