Here are some of the solved questions on examples on units of time to
get the idea to convert the units of time into seconds, minutes, hours,
days, months and year.

Consider the following examples on units of time:

1. Convert the following:

(i) 7 days 6 hours into hours.

(ii) 6 hours 40 minutes into minutes.

(iii) 4 minutes 25 seconds into seconds.

Solution:

(i) 1 day = 24 hours

Therefore, 7 days 6 hours    = (7 x 24) hours + 6 hours

                                      = 168 hours + 6 hours

                                      = 174 hours

(ii) 1 hour = 60 minutes

Therefore, 6 hours + 40 minutes    = (6 x 60) minutes + 40 minutes

                                                   = (360 + 40) minutes

                                                  = 400 minutes

(iii) 1 minute = 60 seconds

Therefore, 4 minutes 25 seconds   = (4 x 60) seconds + 25 seconds

                                                  = (240 + 25) seconds

                                                  = 265 seconds

2. Convert the following:

(i) 5 years 9 months into months.

(ii) 4 months 10 days into days.

(iii) 7 weeks 6 days into days.

(iv) 1 year into seconds.

Solution:

(i) 1 year =12 months

Therefore, 5 years 9 months       = (5 x 12) months + 9 months

                                               = (60 + 9) months = 69 months

(ii) 1 month = 30 days

Therefore, 4 months 10 days    = (4 x 30) + 10 days

                                             = 120 + 10 = 130 days

(iii) 1 week = 7 days

Therefore, 7 weeks 6 days    = (7 x 7) days + 6 days

                                          = (49 + 6) days = 55 days

(iv) 1 year = 365 days, 1 day = 24 hours, 1 hour = 60 minutes

1 minute = 60 seconds

Therefore, 1 year = 365 x 24 x 60 x 60 = 31536000 seconds

3. Convert the following:

(i) 800 hours into days and hours.

(ii) 750 minutes into hours and minutes.

(iii) 900 seconds into minutes and seconds.

Solution:

(i) 24 hours = 1 day

Therefore, 800 hours    = 800 ÷ 24 days

                                  = 33 days 8 hours

Examples on Units of Time

(ii) 60 minutes = 1 hour

750 minutes    = 750 ÷ 60 hours

                      = 12 hours 30 minutes

Examples on Units of Time

(iii) 60 seconds = 1 minute

Therefore, 900 seconds    = (900 ÷ 60) minutes

                                      = 15 minutes

210 weeks = 210 ÷ 52

                 = 4 years 2 weeks

Examples on Units of Time

(iii) 7 days = 1 week

530 days = 530 ÷ 7

             = 75 weeks 5 days

Examples on Units of Time

5. Rose is 12 years 6 months old and Patty is 12 years 8 months old. What is their total age?

Solution:

Rose’s age                  = 12 years  6 months

Patty’s age                 = 12 years  8 months
Total of their ages       = 24 years 14 months

                                = 24 years 1 year 2 months

                                = 25 years 2 months

6. Ron is 14 years 7 months old. His father is 45 years 9 months old. Find the difference between their ages.

Solution:

                     Years     Months

Father’s age      45           9

Ron’s age          14           7
                        31           2

Difference in ages = 31 years 2 months

7. Victor left for school at 7:45 a.m. He came back home at 2:30 p.m.
Find the difference in time between his leaving and coming home.

Solution:

(i) 7:45 a.m. = 07:45 (24-hour clock time)

2:30 p.m. = 14:30 (24-hour clock time)

Difference 14:30 – 07:45

= 6:45, i.e., 6 hours 45 minutes

(ii) Time from 7:45 a.m. to noon = 12 – 7:45 = 4 hours 15 m

Time from 12 noon to 2:30 p.m. = 2 hour 30 minutes

Therefore, total time taken = 4 hours 15 minutes + 2 hour 30 minutes

                                        = 6 hours 45 minutes

8. Shiva Ganga Express started from Varanasi at 18:45 hours and
reached New Delhi at 07:15 hours next day. How long has it taken to
cover the distance from Varanasi to New Delhi?

Solution:

Time taken from 18:45 to 24 midnight = 5 hours 15 minutes

Time taken from 24 midnight to 07:15 = 7 hours 15 minutes

Total time taken = 5 hours 15 minutes + 7 hours 15 minutes

                         = 12 hours 30 minutes
