What is composite number?

A number that has more than two different factors is a
composite number. So, a composite number is also exactly divisible by numbers
other than 1 and itself.

A whole number having at least 3 factors is called the
composite number.

What are Composite Numbers? (Video)

Consider the numbers 4, 6 and 15.

(i) The factors of 4 are –

1 × 4 = 4

2 × 2 = 4

4 × 1 = 4

So, 1, 2 and 4 are the factors of 4.

(ii) The factors of 6 are –

1 × 6 = 6

2 × 3 = 6

6 × 1 = 6

So, 1, 2, 3 and 6 are the factors of 6.

(iii) The factors of 15 are –

1 × 15 = 15

3 × 5 = 15

5 × 3 = 15

15 × 1 = 15

So, 1, 3, 5 and 15 are the factors of 15.

Thus 4, 6 and 15 are composite numbers.

Let us find all the factors of 4, 6, 8 and 9

4 is divisible by 2, 1 and 4. So, the factors are 1, 2 and
4.

6 is divisible by 2, 3, 1 and 6. So, the factors are 1, 2, 3
and 6.

8 is divisible by 2, 4, 1 and 8. So, the factors are 1, 2, 4
and 8.

9 is divisible by 3, 1 and 9. So, the factors are 1, 3 and
9.

Note:

The number 1 is neither prime nor composite. 1 is called a unique number. The number 1 has exactly one factor the number itself.

The number 2 is a prime as well as an even number.

Composite numbers include both even and odd numbers.
