We will learn adding
4-digit numbers with regrouping.
Addition of 4-digit numbers can be done in the same way as
we do addition of smaller numbers. We first arrange the numbers one below the
other in place value columns and then we start adding from the ones place and regroup,
if required as shown in the following examples.
Solved Examples on Adding 4-digit Numbers with Regrouping:
1. Add 6196 and 3025.
Solution:
|
Step I: Add the ones. 6 + 5 = 11 ones = 1 ten and 1 one. Step II: Add the tens. 9 + 2 + 1 (carry over) = 12 tens. 12 Step III: Add the hundreds. 1 + 0 + 1 (carry over) = 2 Step IV: Add the thousands. 6 + 3 = 9 thousands. Write 9 in the |
Hence, 6196 + 3025 = 9221 |
2. Add 3018, 5123 and 1762.
Solution:
|
Step I: Add the ones. 8 + 3 + 2 = 13 ones = 1 ten and 3 one. Step II: Add the tens. 1 + 2 + 6 + 1 (carry over) = 10 tens. Step III: Add the hundreds. 0 + 1 + 7 + 1 (carry over) = 9 Step IV: Add the thousands. 3 + 5 + 1 = 9 thousands. Write 9 |
Hence, 3018 + 5123 + 1762 = 9903 |
