We will learn adding 4-digit numbers without regrouping.

We first arrange the numbers one below the other in place
value columns and then add the digits under each column as shown in the
following examples.


Solved Examples on Adding 4-digit Numbers without Regrouping:

1. Add 1547 and 5231.

Solution:

Step I: Add the ones. 7 + 1 = 8. Write 8 in ones column.

Step II: Add the tens. 4 + 3 = 7. Write 7 in tens column.

Step III: Add the hundreds. 5 + 2 = 7. Write 7 in hundreds column.

Step IV: Add the thousands. 5 + 1 = 6. Write 6 in thousands column.

Adding 4-digit Numbers

    Hence, 1547 + 5231 = 6778

2. Add 2160, 1527 and 3112.

Solution:

Step I: Add the ones. 0 + 7 + 2 = 9. Write 9 in ones column.

Step II: Add the tens. 6 + 2 + 1 = 9. Write 9 in tens column.

Step III: Add the hundreds. 1 + 5 + 1 = 7. Write 7 in hundreds column.

Step IV: Add the thousands. 2 + 1 + 3 = 6. Write 6 in thousands column.

    Hence, 2160 + 1527 + 3112 = 6799

3. Add 2,032 and 2,735.

Add ones, then tens, then hundreds and last thousands
