We will learn addition of 3-digit numbers with regrouping.
What is Regrouping in Addition?
Regrouping in addition means carrying a number to the next place value when the sum in one column is greater than 9.
For example:
278 + 156 = 434
Step-by-step:
Add the ones: 8 + 6 = 14
Write 4 in the ones place and carry 1 ten.
Add the tens:
7 + 5 + 1 = 13
Write 3 in the tens place and carry 1 hundred.
Add the hundreds:
2 + 1 + 1= 4
So, the answer is 434.
Steps to Add 3-Digit Numbers with Regrouping:
Solved Examples:
1. Add 495 and 65.
Solution:
|
Step 1: Arrange the numbers vertically. Step 2: Add the ones. 5 + 5 = 10 ones = 1 ten and 0 one. Write 0 in the ones column and carry over 1 to the tens column. Step 3: Add the tens. 9 + 6 + 1 (carry over) = 16 tens = 1 hundred and 6 tens. Write 6 in the tens column and carry over 1 to the hundreds column. Step 4: Add the hundreds. 4 +1 (carry over) = 5 hundreds. Write 5 in the hundreds column. |
Thus, 495 + 65 = 560 |

2. Add 379 and 558
Solution:
|
Step 1: Arrange the numbers vertically. Step 2: Add the ones column. 9 + 8 = 17 ones = 1 ten and 7 ones. Write 7 in the ones column and carry over 1 to the tens column. Step 3: Add the tens column. 7 + 5 + 1 (carry over) = 13 tens = 1 hundred and 3 tens. Write 3 in the tens column and carry over 1 to the hundreds column. Step 4: Add the hundreds column. 3 + 5 + 1 (carry over) = 9 hundreds. |
Thus 379 + 558 = 937 |
3. Let us add 329 and 156.
Write the numbers one below the other as shown.
Step I: Add the ones.
9 ones + 6 ones = 15 ones
Regroup: 15 ones = 1 ten and 5 ones
Write 5 in the ones place.
Carry over 1 ten and write it under ‘T’.
Step II: Add the tens.
1 ten (carried over) + 2 tens + 5 tens = 8 tens
Write 8 in the tens place.
Step III: Add the hundreds.
3 hundreds + 1 hundred = 4 hundreds
Write 4 in the hundreds place.
The sum is 485.
4. Let us add 362 and 475.
Write the numbers one below the other as shown.
Step I: Add the ones.
2 ones + 5 ones = 7 ones
Write 7 in the ones place.
Step II: Add the tens.
6 tens + 7 tens = 13 tens
Regroup: 13 tens = 1 hundred and 3 tens
Write 3 in the tens place.
Carry over 1 hundred and write it under ‘H’.
Step III: Add the hundreds.
1 hundred (carried over) + 3 hundreds + 4 hundreds = 8 hundreds
Write 8 in the hundreds place.
The sum is 837.
5. Let us and 365 and 267.
Here we need to regroup twice.
Write the numbers one below the other as shown.
Step I: Add the ones.
5 ones + 7 ones = 12 ones
Regroup: 12 ones = 1 ten and 2 ones
Write 2 in the ones place.
Carry over 1 ten and write it under ‘T’.
Step II: Add the tens.
1 ten (carried over) + 6 tens + 6 tens = 13 tens
Regroup: 13 tens = 1 hundred and 3 tens
Write 3 in the tens place.
Carry over 1 hundred and write it under ‘H’.
Step III: Add the hundreds.
1 hundred (carried over) + 3 hundreds + 2 hundreds = 6 hundreds
Write 6 under ‘H’.
The sum is 632.

Regrouping in addition means carrying extra tens or hundreds to the next place value when the sum is greater than 9.
Answer:
We regroup to place numbers in the correct place value columns such as ones, tens, and hundreds.
Answer:
Yes. Regrouping and carrying both describe moving extra value to the next column during addition.
Answer:
We need regrouping when the sum of digits in a column is 10 or more.
Answer:
First add the ones, regroup if needed, then add the tens and hundreds step by step.
Answer:
Yes. If the tens sum is greater than 9, regroup to the hundreds column.
Answer:
Place value helps keep ones, tens, and hundreds in their correct positions while adding.
Answer:
In regrouping addition, you carry numbers to the next column. In non-regrouping addition, no carrying is needed.
