What is Addition without Regrouping?
Addition without regrouping means adding numbers together without carrying any digit to the next place value.
In this method:
- Ones are added with ones
- Tens are added with tens
- Hundreds are added with hundreds
Since the sum in each column is less than 10, no carrying is needed.
For Example:
246 + 132= 378
Here:
- 6 + 2 = 8
- 4 +3 = 7
- 2 + 1 = 3
No digit is carried to the next column, so this is called addition without regrouping.
Simple Definition for Kids:
Addition without regrouping is adding numbers without carrying over any number to the next place value.
We know how to do addition of 3-digit numbers without regrouping. Let us recall it solving some examples.
1. Add 572 and 424.

9 9 6 → 9 hundreds + 9 tens + 6 ones

A. Addition of Two 3-Digit Numbers:
2. The shopkeeper has 153 packets of chocolate cookies and 124 butter cookies. How many cookies are there in all?

Solution: To find out the total number of cookies, we will perform addition. Step 1: First add the ones. 3 + 4 = 7 Step 2: Next add the tens. 5 + 2 = 7 Step 3: Then, add the hundreds. 1 + 1 = 2 |
 Thus, there are 277 cookies in the shop. |
3. Add 641 and 325.

Step 1: Arrange the numbers vertically. Step 2: First add the ones. 1 + 5 = 6 Step 3: Now, add the tens. 4 + 2 = 6 Lastly, add the hundreds. 6 + 3 = 9 |
 Thus, 641 + 325 = 966 |
4. Let us add 451 and 246.
Solution:
Write the numbers one below the other.
Step I: Add the ones.
1 one + 6 ones = 7 ones
Write 7 in the ones place.
Step II: Add the tens.
5 tens + 4 tens = 9 tens
Write 9 in the tens place.
Step III: Add the hundreds.
4 hundreds + 2 hundreds = 6 hundreds
Write 6 in the hundreds place.
The sum is 697.
4. Add 245 and 132.
Step I: Arrange the two numbers in hundreds, tens and ones.

We will add three 3-digit numbers in the same way as we add two 3-digit numbers.

5. Add 542, 234 and 103. Solution: Step 1: Arrange the numbers vertically. Step 2: First add the ones. 2 + 4 + 3 = 9 Step 3: Now, add the tens. 4 + 3 + 0 = 7 Step 4: Lastly, add the hundreds. 5 + 2 + 1 = 8 |
 Thus, 542 + 234 + 103 = 879 |

6. On the ‘World Environment Day’ class I planted 146 saplings and class II planted 433 saplings. How many saplings did they plant in all?
