---

✅ The counting numbers 1, 2, 3, 4,… are called natural numbers.

✅ The natural numbers and zero together form the collection of whole numbers.

✅ Properties of addition of whole numbers:

1. Closure property: If a, b are any two whole numbers, then a + b is also a whole number.
2. Commutative property: If a, b are any two whole numbers, then a + b = b + a.
3. Associative property: If a, b, c are any three whole numbers, then (a + b) + c = a + (b + c).
4. Additive identity: If a is a whole number, then a + 0 = 0 + a = a.
5. Cancellation law of addition: If a, b and c are any three whole numbers, then a + c = b + c ⇒ a = b.

✅ Properties of subtraction of whole numbers:

1. The subtraction of whole numbers does not obey the Closure property.
2. Subtraction of whole numbers is not commutative.
3. Subtraction of whole numbers is not associative.

✅ Properties of multiplication of whole numbers:

(i) Closure property: If a, b are any two whole numbers, then a × b is also a whole number.

(ii) Commutative property: If a, b are any two whole numbers, then a × b = b × a

(iii) Associative property: If a, b and c are any three whole numbers, then (a × b) × c = a × (b × c).

(iv) Distributive property: If a, b and care three whole numbers, then a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c    or    a × (b – c) = a × b – a × c, where b > c

(v) Multiplicative identity: If a is a whole number, then a × 1 = 1 × a = a.

(vi) Cancellation law of multiplication: If a, b and c are any three whole numbers, then a × c = b × c  ⇒  a = b

✅ Properties of division of whole numbers:

(i) Division of whole numbers does not obey the closure property.

(ii) Division of whole numbers is not commutative.

(iii) Division of whole numbers is not associative.

(iv) Division by 0 is a meaningless.

(v) If a is a non-zero whole number, then a ÷ a = 1.

(vi) If a is a non-zero whole number, then a ÷ 1 = a.
